I see a generic error with a reference
Sometimes Sales Scribe shows a message like:
Something went wrong. Please try again — if it keeps happening, contact support and quote reference A1B2C3.
This guide explains what it means and what to do.
What it means
Sales Scribe deliberately never shows you internal technical detail. When it hits an unexpected problem, instead of a confusing technical message it shows this friendly one, together with a short reference code (a few letters and numbers). Behind the scenes, the full technical detail of what happened is recorded against that exact reference, so our support team can look it up.
Everyday, expected situations — like trying to edit an issued invoice — have their own clear messages. The generic reference message is for the unexpected.
What to do
- Try the action again. Some problems are momentary (for example, a brief connection issue) and succeed on a second attempt.
- Note the reference code and roughly what you were doing when it appeared (which page, which document).
- If it keeps happening, contact support and quote the reference. That code lets us find exactly what went wrong far more quickly than a description alone.
Things worth checking first
Some actions show this general message even though the underlying cause is ordinary — particularly:
- Recording or allocating a payment. Re-check the payment is posted and the amount isn't larger than what's outstanding — see A payment won't save or allocate.
- Removing a record that is in use. Some delete actions are blocked when a record has history — usually with a clear "archive instead" message, but occasionally with this general one. If a delete fails, archive the record instead.
- A foreign-currency action when no exchange rate is available. Check the rate you need exists on the exchange rates page.
